The Properties of Copper

Copper, also called purple copper, is a relatively pure type of copper, which can generally be approximated as pure copper. It has good conductivity and plasticity, but its strength and hardness are relatively poor. Purple copper has excellent thermal conductivity, ductility, and corrosion resistance. The trace impurities in copper have a serious impact on the conductivity and thermal conductivity of copper. Titanium, phosphorus, iron, silicon, etc. significantly reduce conductivity, while cadmium, zinc, etc. have little effect. The solid solubility of sulfur, selenium, tellurium, etc. in copper is very low, and they can form brittle compounds with copper, which has little effect on conductivity but can reduce processing plasticity.

What Cutting Tools Are Needed for Copper Machining?

1.Milling cutters: commonly used milling cutters in copper machining include ball end milling cutters, end milling, T-shaped milling cutters, etc. Ball end milling cutters are suitable for surface and arc machining, end milling cutters are suitable for flat machining, and T-shaped milling cutters are suitable for groove machining.

2.Drill bits: commonly used drill bits in copper machining include center drills, machine drills, hole processing drills, etc. Center drills are suitable for drilling center holes, machine drills are suitable for flat drilling, and hole processing drills are suitable for deep hole processing.

3.Turning tools: The commonly used turning tools in copper processing include outer round turning tools, inner round turning tools, cutting blades, etc. External turning tools are suitable for precision machining of external circles, internal turning tools are suitable for precision machining of internal circles, and cutting blades are suitable for cutting.

Factors We Need to Consider During Copper Machining

1. Tool selection: Select the corresponding tool according to different copper machining objects and shapes, paying attention to the material and size of the tool.

2. Mastery of cutting speed: Due to the low cutting speed of copper, it is necessary to master the appropriate cutting speed to avoid excessive tool wear or burrs on the machining surface.

3. Use of processing fluid: Processing copper requires the use of processing fluid to reduce processing temperature, reduce wear, and facilitate chip removal.

4. Protection of machining surface: Measures need to be taken during the machining process to protect the machining surface from scratches or oxidation.

5. Chip treatment: Copper chips are relatively small and require appropriate measures to be taken to prevent environmental pollution or safety accidents.

Common Copper Grade for Machining

1.C11000 purple copper

C11000 copper, also known as electrolytic copper, is a high-purity copper material mainly composed of copper and silver, with a silver content of less than 0.04%. It has excellent conductivity, thermal conductivity, and cold workability, and is commonly used in the manufacturing of wires, gas pipes, and other electrical components. In addition, C11000 copper also has good corrosion resistance and weldability, making it widely used in the chemical industry and aerospace fields.

3.C26000 purple copper

C26000 copper is a type of brass with a copper content of approximately 70% and a zinc content of approximately 30%. It has good mechanical and corrosion resistance properties and is commonly used in the manufacturing of mechanical parts and decorative materials. In addition, C26000 copper also has good processing performance, making it easy to cut, forge, and weld.
2.C12200 purple copper

C12200 copper is a type of brass with a copper content of over 99.9%. It has good corrosion resistance and processability, and is commonly used in the manufacturing of water pipes, air conditioning pipes, and mechanical components. In addition, C12200 copper also has excellent antibacterial properties, making it widely used in the manufacturing industry of daily necessities.

4.Other copper plate numbers

In addition to the three common copper grades mentioned above, there are also many other grades of copper materials, such as C17200, C17510, C17530, etc. These materials have specific application areas, such as manufacturing springs, joints, and conductive plates.

Different copper grades have their unique characteristics and applicability. When selecting copper materials, appropriate grades should be selected for production and manufacturing based on specific usage environments and requirements. If you don’t know which copper is best for your design, please contact with us and our engineer will choose the best option for you based on our experience.
FAQs
  • What are the factors that affect the machining performance of copper?

    1. Organizational structure of materials: The organizational structure of copper directly affects the processing performance. Generally, materials with small and uniform particles have better processing performance.
    2. Machining conditions: The machining temperature, machining speed, machining pressure, and other conditions of copper have a significant impact on the processing performance. These conditions must be controlled within a reasonable range to ensure better processing results.
    3. Cutting tools: The quality, shape, hardness, and edge condition of cutting tools can all affect the machining effect of copper, so choosing a suitable cutting tool is very important.
    4. Selection of coolant: Factors such as the type, flow rate, and temperature of the coolant can all affect the processing effect of copper.
  • What cutting tools are needed for copper machining?

    形状 Created with Sketch.
Purple copper is a brass material with high hardness and difficulty in machining. When we do copper turning and milling, it is difficult for ordinary steel knives to handle this material, so more specific cutting tools are needed. The following are some cutting tools used for copper machining:
    1. Hard alloy cutting tools
Hard alloy cutting tools are one of the most widely used tools for copper machining. Due to the high hardness of copper, it is necessary to use a hard blade for cutting. Meanwhile, hard alloy cutting tools also have the characteristic of wear resistance, which can improve cutting efficiency and machining accuracy.
    2. End milling cutter
End mill is a tool used for processing metal materials, suitable for processing complex shaped copper parts. End mills provide people with a more flexible solution to meet various machining requirements of different shapes and sizes.
    3. Scraper
A scraper is a tool specifically used for cutting and shearing fiber materials, and can also play its role in processing copper. The use of a scraper can effectively cut copper parts, achieving more accurate machining results.
  • What are the processing methods for copper?

    1. Cold processing
Copper exhibits good plasticity and deformation ability in cold processing, making it suitable for use in die-casting, casting, and other cold and deep cold forming processes. Common cold working methods include milling, turning, drilling, cutting, cold forging, stretching, etc.
    2. Hot working
Hot working is a method of processing the desired shape of cold-formed copper by heating it to a certain temperature. Common hot working methods include hot extrusion, hot rolling, hot forging, hot forming, etc.
    3. Welding
Purple copper has good welding performance and is suitable for various welding methods. Usually, methods such as oxidation welding, gas welding, arc welding, and laser welding are used
